Hydrotherapy

Hydrotherapy, also known as Aquatic Physiotherapy, refers to physiotherapy treatment provided in a warm water pool. The warm water allows muscle relaxation and pain relief such that the physiotherapist can achieve effective joint mobilisation and rehabilitation exercises, which may not be able to be performed on land. The buoyancy of the water enables an exercise program when weight bearing is otherwise prohibited, for example after surgery or painful arthritic conditions. The water can be used for both resistance in strength exercises or as assistance through floating.

Your qualified physiotherapist will create your hydrotherapy program based on your individual requirements and aimed at improving your individual function. All hydrotherapy sessions are conducted in a heated pool, within Ascot Vale Leisure Centre, where the clinic is located.

What are the benefits of exercise in a heated water environment?

  • Pain relief

  • Reduction of muscle spasm (tight muscles)

  • Ease of movements compared to land based exercise

  • Reduction of swelling

  • Enhanced cardiovascular fitness

  • Increased strength & endurance

  • Improved balance & stabilisation

  • Enhanced wellbeing

What are the common conditions or injuries that can benefit from Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy can be used to help a wide number of conditions and injuries that you may experience, which can include:

  • Back and/or neck pain

  • Muscle and/or joint pain

  • Acute sprain or strain

Hydrotherapy can booked as an individual session with the physiotherapist or you may progress into small groups where you continue to perform your own program under group supervision of the physiotherapist.
